I would be inclined to suggest renaming it "Mirror View Horizontal" or "Mirror View Vertical", except in the FX Stack there is already an effect named "Mirror" which adds a perfectly mirrored image (either vertical or horizontal orientation) of the original image. in the second case the term "Flip" (the Flips panel or keyboard shortcuts for Next Image/Previous Image / Next Bookmark/Previous Bookmark) is used in the sense of viewing a selected set of drawings forward and backward in rapid succession to assess the action. With the View menu > Flip > Horizontally or Vertically the word "Flip" is used in the sense of the image being "mirrored" or "reversed" (turned over). Thinking about this makes me wonder if the nomenclature of "Flip" should be reconsidered for this function, because the term Flip is also used in TVPaint to refer to the act of scrubbing or toggling quickly back and forth between drawings on the Timeline, to simulate the animator's traditional method of "flipping" and/or "rolling" drawings to assess how the animation is working. The marker is inserted as a quick visual reminder that the image is in flipped/reversed mode: When it returns to the original orientation the little marker disappears. A basic illustration, painting, and doodling tool, it. The application draws inspiration from Microsoft Paint and comes as a replacement for Apple’s discontinued MacPaint tool. FX Stack flip horizontal or vertical is permanently applied, but View menu > Flip > Horizontally (or Vertically) is temporary.īecause of that, I think when using Flip Image Horizontally or Flip Image Vertically from the View menu it would be useful to have a little marker superimposed over the flipped image, either Flipped (H) or Flipped (V) to alert the user that the image has been flipped. Free 2.7 (1621 votes) Mac users can go back to basics Paintbrush is a user-friendly and lightweight paint program for Mac OS. This is different than applying from the FX Stack > Distortion > Flip (horizontally, vertically, or both). If it is accidentally left in the mirrored view, when you go to export the project it will be exported in the original view. Preview can do it, Preview is actually very powerful and can do amazing things with PDF and such but it's total pain in the ass to use it to edit something. It's useful to be able to temporarily flip (mirror) the image horizontally or vertically, but when doing it from the View menu the mirrored image is only temporary. The professional stuff is out there and it's really good but we still don't have an app for stitching a few random images together and put a text on top as easy as with MS Paint. I think macOS needs an image editor that aims for the simplicity of MS Paint. I'm sure when I learn the app a bit I will see how simple and powerful it is but with MS Paint everything makes sense immediately, it's just the pinnacle of intuitive image editing. Why don't you first give me the tool that can do something on that canvas so that I can get my feet wet? When I move my cursor over the canvas, it indicates that I am doing something wrong("forbidden" icon next to the cursor). I don't know? Let me see the default so I can decide if I want it bigger or smaller. Paintbrush boasts of including features such as rewritten text tool for pinpoint-accurate insertion, cropping, image resizing, transparent selection. On Windows in paint all you do is paste the picture and then resize it by dragging the corners, is there a way to do this on macs I cant seem to find a way to do this in preview. This App is nice but the moment I launched it, it started forcing me make decisions: I had to decide how large the canvas should be. MS Paint is unmatched on intuitiveness and simplicity. I thought I’d share that, since it colors my view. I am not a professional and just use it occasionally for design, documents, and personal photos. I also pay for Omnigraffle, but it’s high enough it feels like a burden vs supporting developers. It feels very reasonable to me and brings me back to the feeling of supporting developers’ work.Īdobe is so expensive and invasive. The newer stuff like workspaces for different types of editing seemed odd, but I do flip between the illustration layout and photo layout and enjoy that. The GIMP has always been functional but painful. It’s pretty sophisticated, but the feature set I use is easily within reach and it’s intuitive to me. Both the old Pixelmator and Pixelmator Pro have been commercial software I really felt like I needed and want to buy. It would be fine to have it as View > Image > 'Mirror -Left-Right' and 'Mirror - Up-Down'. I also see your point about horizontal and vertical. I haven’t enjoyed an image editor as much since Photoshop 5 in the 90s. Otherwise I think for the View menu function, 'Mirror Image Horizontally' or 'Mirror Image Vertically' works better than 'Flip Image Horizontally' or 'Flip Image Vertically'.
